To give a bit of history here, the first Gundam Extreme Versus was developed by Byking. That studio was formed of ex-Capcom staff that worked on the older Gundam Versus arcade games, so it was no surprise that the Extreme rendition turned out great.

Byking were involved in the arcade versions up to Gundam Extreme Versus Full Boost, but as of the PlayStation 3 port of that and from Gundam Extreme Versus Maxi Boostonwards, the development for these games was taken in-house to Bandai Namco.

This culminated in the recent and new standalone release Gundam Versus, which was good but effectively copy and pasted the functionality from the Byking versions.

So here we are with Gundam Extreme Versus 2, which is an arcade version of Gundam Versus and Byking is nowhere to be seen.

To be honest, while I enjoy these games, I have some mixed feelings with this whole setup. While Byking is doing okay, as the upcoming mecha arcade game Starwing Paradox looks amazing, these endless clones of Gundam Extreme Versus are beginning to grate.

To be honest, Gundam Extreme Versus Maxi Boost ON is beginning to look a bit old now, so I can see why we are getting an update and using the Gundam Versus game as a base makes decent sense in terms of developmental logistics.

Gundam Extreme Vs Force

I just hope Bandai Namco can come up with something new, or better yet hire Byking back to reinvent the series like they did with the original Gundam Extreme Versus.

Gundam Extreme Versus 2 is released in Japanese arcades on October 30.
