I was in Philippines in April and May this year, and I can tell you this much, the cost of electronics, such as TVs, are one-half times more higher than the ones I bought when I came back to US for a visit. Philippines is becoming as high in cost, and now so much higher in electronics it is cheaper buying in U.S. and paying shipping costs, it is still cheaper buying in U.S. and shipping it than buying locally. Amazing the difference across the board at stores and different brands were ALL substantially higher than in US Same goes for vehicles also. |

I bought an alarm clock radio from Europe or from Australia. It's says 50Hz on it. Voltage converters cannot change frequencies, Hz or cycles. In order to change from 220V AC @ 60Hz (Philippines) to 220V-240V AC @ 50Hz. 12V DC adapter (100V - 240V 50/60Hz, 220V - 240V AC8 ~ 50/60Hz, 110V/220V ~ 60Hz) and 50 Hz 220V power inverter from Europe and Australia. Converting 60Hz to 50Hz by using DC There's no problem by using an American alarm clock radio,(120V 60Hz) with 50w stepdown transformer and Japanese alarm clock radio (100V 50/60Hz; 50Hz and 60Hz switchable.) in the Philippines. Due to frequency or cycles mismatch, 50Hz clock will run fast on 60Hz. 50Hz power inverter required in order to use 50Hz clock in the Philippines. |

Dear Kabayan, As the same situation with regards to bringing in 42' TV worrying about the taxes upon arrival at NAIA airport terminal going to customs section. Well I attest that 42' for an OFW with one unit of this item is 'TAX FREE'. I bring home my 42' Sony LED TV last year 2013. All you have to do with your unit is to make it safe by wrapping shrink film around it to protect from being broken and declare it as used unit. |

As per Custom tax regulations. Returning residents or OFW's, All personal effects and household goods used abroad for at least 6 months and the dutiable value of which is not more than Ten Thousand (P10,000 pesos) are exempt from duties and taxes. Any amount in excess of P10, 000 pesos is subject to 50% duty to the first P10,000 exemption across the board as provided for under Section 105 (F) of the TCP. But for some other cases this is really tax free especially LCD TV 32' TO 40'. |

I see some refrigerators for sale in the Philippines that are 110V with a 220/110v transformer included. Will these use twice as much power as a 220v one? No, a modern transformer has a pretty high efficiency, and will cause a loss of less than 5%. It still is a small loss though, you'll pay for on your electricity bill. Power (measured in Watt) is voltage times current (measured in Ampere). The transformer will turn 220 volts into 110 volts, and the same time the current on the 110 volt side will be double that of the 220 volt side.--Jeroen. |

As the Bureau of Customs in The Philippines are starting to use more and more x-ray equipment, I would highly suggest bringing what you can as carry-on. I have never seen an x-ray of carry-on, which checked in luggage may be scanned before it makes it to the baggage claim carousel. You can bring up to a 21' for I will be moving there soon for school and of course, with the high price of electronics in the Philippines has made utilizing places like the Sony Outlet and Apple Store a must before moving. Consider he newest iPhone unlocked and ready for the Philippines costs $650 in the USA whereas the same iPhone will be $800+/- in he Philippines. The same iPhone dock clock radio I purchased at a Sony outlet for $80 runs for $150 in the PI. Just some food for thought. |

Hi Jeroen, after reading all the questions and answers, I still could not find any specific answer to what I'm supposed to ask you. I have a Sony Bravia 52' LCD TV and I'm using it in Australia for the last five years. It's 220V-240V AC, 50 hertz only. Is taking analog & digital broadcast. If I take and use it in the Philippines, would I encounter problems when it comes to signals, systems and hertz? (60Hz in the Phil.) Appreciate any comment. Thank you. |

Are there any implication to this with regards to the voltage? Could you recommend what made of NTSC TV in the Philippines that would work well with PAL dvd player. Hello.. I'm confused with what i read from #1 power compatibility. television and dishwasher cannot be adjusted and then from #2 TV and DVD compatibility says .Tv and dvd uses American ntsc and if you're coming from North America you will have little trouble? They're confusing statements. Just to clarify, if you're buying LCD tv from Canada, can we use it in the Philippines? There are two different issues here. Power compatibility and signal compatibility. A North American LCD TV will be made for 110 volt 60 Hz, and will be quickly destroyed if connected to the Philippine 220 volt grid. If you use a transformer, however, you can use it, as the signal is the same: NTSC. If you bring an LCD TV from Europe (230 volts), you can connect it, but you won't be able to receive any program, as it will be made for the PAL or SECAM system. More and more TVs are multi-system, but you will have to verify that with the producer (dealers often don't know this).--Jeroen. |

Hate to burst anyone's hopes on this.. but this information is simply WRONG. At least if you are American. I am from the US and currently living here in Cebu for about 9 months. The cost of electronics here is SIGNIFICANTLY higher here than in the US. Usually double the cost, sometimes even more. This applies to laptop computers, home theater systems (name brand), Plasma or LCD HDTV's (not much use here if you want TRUE HD content unless you bring your own Blu-ray or HD-DVD players and discs.. or if you have a PS3 or Xbox 360.. because there are NO HD-DVD or Blu-ray movies sold here and there are NO cable, over air, or satellite providers of HD content in the Philippines.) It also applies to desktop computers (name brand) and even if you get a no name locally built (with imported components) PC, you will pay significantly more than you would for the same thing in the US. Hi Robert, you are mainly talking about high-end equipment, which is more expensive in the Philippines, simply because the demand is quite small. Many people are still happy with VCD here! Furthermore, this article was written a few years ago, before the decline of the dollar. You may have noticed that many hotels have since switched from quoting prices in dollars to euros or pesos. Of course you can bring an Xbox or other device when you fly to the Philippines, but carrying a Plasma HDTV on an international flight is not easy. Finally, don't forget that you can bargain over prices, especially if you pay for them directly.--Jeroen |

Hee, Jeroen, hartelijk bedankt voor deze tips! The Internet is such an amazing thing. This is an example of the world becoming smaller all the time. I live in Australia, been to Bohol last month to visit my fiancee, looked for info on compatibility for a new cell phone there for her and Googled Jeroen with his advice. Anyway, he is totally right with everything here full marks, mate! Bohol is a beautiful, interesting, safe place to visit with lovely people. A bit how Bali would be if it weren't overrun by tourists, only nicer. And that is of course, not even mentioning the beautiful ladies, of course, I am biased. And lucky. Ok, enough raving. Just visit this island, you will want to come back again and again. |

If you buy tools in Europe stick to Makita. They are 50/60 Hertz or the older Ryobi types also clock radios with an AC/DC adapter Sony or Grundig make a couple or Nilfisk, make there vacumes. My house in Alburquerque has nearly everything from OZ even the wiring because if you want to fit an earth leakage device, etc the safety for children or anyone else you cannot find the material over there. Just as a matter of interest one island in Japan is 50 Hertz. The other is 60 Hertz and one final thing if you are having cable TV, don't worry about if your LCD screen has an NTSC tuner in because it will not matter. Even with cable TV, you will need a TV tuner, as the signal is still modulated on the cable. Further, the difference between NTSC and PAL is more than just the modulation, it is also about the frames per second and the lines in each frame.--Jeroen. |

Any 50Hrtz electric motor you will get problems with it depends how often you use the particular thing if it is only used now and again like an electric drill it could last some time but things like ceiling fans will fail quite quickly i know i lost about 2000 australian dollars not understanding this if you plug a timer in to a wall socket 60 hertz is about 15 minutes faster |

My cellphones are all from the US, just make sure that it's one of those 'triband' or 'quadband' type (it'll say on the box or the vendors could tell you here in the US at any kiosks/mall outlet). Most 'quadband' are unlocked (vendor will or could tell yo this also) otherwise you have to unlock it yourself. Check this website www.unlock123.com (you'll need a credit card VISA/MasterCard - cost between $3-4 US). I've used it to unlock one of my cellphones. I use a SIM card from Smart on roaming so I could receive txt messages from PI then I use my Cingular (US) phone to text them. Only need to have a minimum load of 125 pesos to keep it on roaming indefinitely ( only need to load every 3 mos) unlike Globe, you need at least a 500 peso load and it would shut down when you get to lower than the 500 pesos minimum load or when the load expires. My 2 cents. |

Hi! I am planning to visit the Philippines from Houston and my folks are requesting cell phones for pasalubong. I want to buy them go-phones (means no contract). Is it true that since there is no contract involved, all they need to do is buy sim cards and these phones are good to use? I have 10 requested phones on my list, will that create any problem with the customs? Please advice if cell phones for pasalubong is a good idea or not. I appreciate your prompt advise and have a great day! Your web site is very insightful, by the way.. My first take is that it is probably more convenient to buy them in the Philippines. You don't have to worry about the right type (GSM 900 or 1800 band) SIM cards (These cards determine the phone number and subscription details; no need to register phones, etc., with GSM, only thing to be aware of is a nasty feature called SIM-lock) power adapters (will be good for 220 volts), etc., while the price is probably much the same. Yes, I know about this craze about things brought from the USA, but these things are most likely made in the Philippines (or some other Asian country) anyway. Also, with one or two, customs won't complain much, but with ten, you'll probably exceed the PHP 10,000 allowance for gifts from Balikbayans--Jeroen. |

Also, I strongly advise against carrying an ice box: these things are heavy, and will never keep things frozen for the duration of the trip. Probably the airline will complain as well (though I never tried it). Furthermore, sausages, steaks, pork, etc., are readily available in the Philippines.--Jeroen. |

Handy information! I am coming from Europe and would really like to purchase a portable DVD for the Philippines. Can I we buy multi region portable DVDs in the Philippines? You can buy these both in Europe and in the Philippines; you probably have more choice in Europe, while the price may be slightly lower in the Philippines. The cheaper, Chinese brands are typically better (multi region); avoid the better known brands, as these are harder to get multi region. Note that, although slowly increasing, DVDs are still not commonplace in the Philippines. Most people expect VCDs, so take care your player can also play these.--Jeroen |

This is handy well done. I might need this in the future. Anyone about solar power for light and consumer goods? I've seen solar power being used to power communication systems in remote parts of Bohol, but think it is too expensive if you can be connected to the network, even with the relatively high cost of electricity in Bohol. In some areas, windmills might be feasable, but, since the Bohol power companies do not allow you to feed your surplus to the net, it may be difficult to earn them back.--Jeroen. |

Thanks for your information! I was lost in deciding which Trace inverter/charger to use for my solar system. I didn't know what the HZ was for Davao Del Sur. With your information I can now order the correct one to hard wire directly to the breaker box of our home we are building there. Hopefully this will help in lowering the 3000 peso electric bill that we are getting monthly since the electric company keeps raising there price for electric. By the way! Dose any one here Know of a good battery company there in the Philippines that sells Deep cycle, long amp hour batteries? The last time I was there I went to many Companies and they didn't know what I was talking about. All the batteries they had was thick plate batteries that did not specify amp hour or if it was deep cycle. |

I will really appreciate your reply..and keep up the good work. .Thanks.. Bring it as a personal belonging, and you can normally bring it through. Balikbayans are allowed to bring upto P10,000 in appliances tax free to give to relatives. I have Nokia 6630 unit cellphone with sim card i buy it here in japan vodafone shop but its already locked by vodafone network, can i unlock it and use it with prepaid simcard? please help me this problem.. You could ask Vodafone first, and if they refuse, there are most likely shops in the Philippines that can help you. To do it yourself, you'll need a special service connector and some software, which isn't worth buying for just one time. In some countries unlocking your own phone may be considered illegal, but I'm not aware of such a law in the Philippines.--Jeroen. |

I an going to Philippines in 2005and ihave a cell phone that is locked A NOKIA, can i get it unlocked and how much should it cost? I will be in cebu city in nov/05, do all cell ph stores have the unlocking devices? Do the large stores like S&M carry new lap tops. thank you. I don't know any shops unlocking cellphones, but I have no doubt there are plenty, and as a result it shouldn't cost much. The unlocking devices themselves are normally not more than a service cable and a small computer program. In SM, you can buy laptops in special computer shops, but be sure to compare prices abroad as well as in the Philippines, and remember, you won't be able to go back for whatever complaint you have when back at home--decide yourself if this is worth a few bucks saving--Jeroen. |

Your choice of titles will be much more limited, to only the international most well-known titles, and you'll probably have a hard time finding collector's box sets, etc. Bootlegs in the Philippines are normally VCD's in a horrible quality, not worth even the 50 pesos they ask for them.--Jeroen. |

And is there any plug-adapter for 2-hole plug (phi) to 3-hole plug (ind) sold in the Philippines? It should be no problem bringing up your devices to the Philippines with 50-60 hertz. About the Plug, maybe you can buy an converter over there, there are different types of plugs and dont know which plug are you using in Indonesia. But the European plug converter is no problem, you can buy it.--Lyn |

I am moving to the Philippines and building a house. They told me I need a 15 amp transformer to meet my needs. Will this be enough to power a very large american style house. I will be using both 110 and 220 items. I will be sending over a 200amp circuit breaker box, prior to building. Do I need more or bigger circuit breaker box? and what can you tell me about wire size that I will need. I can't estimate your needs, but rating 15 ampere at 110 volt as 1650 watt, you can connect a number of appliances such as television sets, stereo, or computer, but not a washing machine or a big airco. My advice is to avoid a transformer, since they constantly consume a little bit of energy; in long run enough to justify buying 220 volt equipment in the Philippines. In Holland I would use at least 2.5 sq mm wire, and 1.5 sq mm only to light fixtures, following the codes in force here; but I don't know the codes in the Philippines. Ask a local electrician or the local supplier (who will have to approve the connection) before starting construction.--Jeroen. |

I bought a 25inch. Sony Wega TV set here in Jeddah Saudi Arabia and would like to send it by air cargo to Manila. The air cargo here in Jeddah is asking for a tax fee of SR150 (equivalent to approx. 2,200 Phil. Peso). They said that TVs more than 21 inches are subject to customs tax as per Philippine Customs Law! Is this true? Please advise. Import duties on new items in the Philippines can be stiff, so this might be true. I don't know, but you could research the same on Google. When you bring things yourself as a Balikbayan, you might be able to bring it in under a the Balikbayan exception of goods up to 10,000 pesos, but it appears to me such a TV set is more expensive..--Jeroen. |

DEVELOPMENT FOR THE INVESTMENT IN WINDFARMS After nearly four years of intensive research, site identifications, viability studies and documentation work, the CAMMON WINDSOLAR ENERGY INC. was established, consisting of German and Filipino partners. We formed a joint venture with a reliable and competent Canadian, and other German Partners to make our organization stronger. The CAMMON WINDSOLAR ENERGY INC. has identified more than 36 DOE protected sites, all of them with an average wind speed of more than 7 m/s, and an overall area of more than 100,000 hectares, more than 80% is owned by the Government. The potential sites are distributed all over the Philippine territories, where the necessary permissions are available. We are also searching for additional financing partners to develop more of our different areas. The plan of CAMMON WINDSOLAR ENERGY INC. is, to generate and serve the growing energy demand of the Philippines with safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible wind power generation. We need additional clients who are interested to sign power purchase agreements for our first Wind Farms in the Philippines, located in Ilocos Norte, Nueva Ecija and in Cebu. We will become a reliable partner and provider of wind power in the Philippines. We ensure stable and fixed prices for 15 – 25 years, also during peak demand times, and when prices for electricity out of other resources are high. • We are searching for clients who will buy parts from the output of our 36 MW Burgos Wind Farm, planned and located in Ilocos Norte, when completed. • In addition we want to sell 35 MW from the output of the planned 46 MW Wind Farm in Caranglan. We hope to find additional partners for the renewable energy resources, who will also promote the development of new renewable generation. • From a Wind Farm in Oslob we can sell 32 MW out of the planned capacity between 45 and 48 MW. We look for interested buyers in Cebu, Mandaue. The Ecco Zones, ELCOs, Cement Factories and local Pharma Industry as well as the Port and bigger Malls could be good and long term partners for our ideas. The buyers of larger current quantities are our goal as clients, and long-term supply contracts for power across the country are our target, to develop more Wind Farms in other areas of the Philippines. We try to develop our locations progressively, and therefore we seek locally in the Philippines and world-wide for guarantors and finance companies. www.cammonwindsolar.com Interesting subject, but Ilocos Norte is quite far from Bohol.. Nice website though.--Jeroen. |

Electricity in the Philippines is not very expensive. In the USA you pay 15-20 cents per kWh. In the Philippines it is 6-10 cents per kWh. What do you say? As almost everywhere, the rates for electricity in the Philippines are compounded, and include, besides the basic charge for consumption, fees for distribution, network losses, metering charges, local taxes, environmental taxes, and so on. It boils down to rates at about 6 to 10 pesos per kWh, depending on usage and where you are. In US currency that is 10 to 18 cents per kWh. But most people who have to pay these rates have incomes in pesos, and thus it is fairer to use the PPP (purchasing power parity) rate (the rate that shows how much you can buy for your money for normal middle class spending habits, not how much you can exchange it for in foreign exchange), which will make the rate roughly equivalent to 40 to 72 cents er kWh. For poorer people, earning in the order of 4000 pesos per month, the rate can even 'feel like' paying 3 to 5 dollars per kWh; now that is expensive!--Jeroen. |

Re electric supply. The 'official' electric supply in the Philippines is 220 volt 60 cycles. however, 110volt 60 cycles is available in some areas of Manila, and some towns/cities such as Angeles and Pampanga, where historically, electricity was at one time supplied from US military bases to the immediate surrounding area. Electric sockets. The present Philippine building code specifies round pin sockets for 220v and the flat US type for 110v. Most modern buildings conform to this. The 2 pin plugs are the type used in Japan, other Asian countries and some European countries, of the type seen on shavers etc. If you buy a TV, an electric fan or a rice cooker in Manila, the round type plug will be on it. There are also 3 pin plugs/sockets. The third pin is earth/ground. They will be fitted to your locally bought washing machines etc. 110v equipment is becoming rare, and costs more! Someone has mentioned cutting off plugs and fitting local ones. The available flat ones are not much good. The available round type are better, but not much. Here is my tip: if you find you have the wrong plug, don't look just for a plug. There are small electronics stores and fan repair stores all over the place from where you can buy a complete new cable a couple of metres long, with a good moulded plug on the end for just a few pesos. As far as price is concerned, I do not agree that Philippine electronic goods are less than Europe. Some may be, others certainly are not. Just ask a Filipino overseas contract worker about that. Or a Filipina nurse working in the UK. Checkout what they are hauling home at vacation time, or sending in those Balikbayan boxes! Of course, if you have to pay high freight from anywhere you will lose out, but if your company is paying, bring everything you can! When you don't need them anymore they will still have value.. quality is there. Thanks a lot for your comments. My own article was based on the conditions in Bohol, where US type sockets with 220 volts, 60 cycles are still the rule.--Jeroen. |

The Philippines Bureau of Customs announced that there will now be two lanes at airports for incoming passengers, one for those who have “nothing to declare”, and one for those who have with them goods that are subject to import duties or taxes.
Until now, all travelers had to fill in this customs form. See also our Manila Airport Arrival Guide
Since yesterday, April 16, 2014, passengers entering the Philippines now have the option not to fill in the customs declaration form, provided they have nothing to declare.
Under the new order, which will initially be implemented at Terminals 1, 2, and 3 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), and at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), inbound passengers can choose between two lanes.
The green lane is for those with “nothing to declare”, meaning they do not have items in their baggage that are subject to duties and taxes, can be brought in duty free and are not subject to any import prohibition, regulation or restriction.
On the other hand, the red lane is for passengers who bring in goods that are subject to import duties or taxes, are above the exempted Customs limits, or are prohibited, controlled or regulated by several statues.
Customs Commissioner John P. Sevilla said: “Streamlined processes at international airports are part of the reforms we are undertaking at the Bureau. The dual-channel will help simplify our security and risk management protocols, shorten clearance procedures and reduce the long lines and waiting time for customs clearance”.
